Introducing The Cape Duo Challenge

The Cape Duo Challenge

You can dust off your bicycles this October with another “one-of-its-kind” multi-day stage event which will take place from Thursday October 5, to Sunday October 8, 2017. If you had thought you had seen all the possible one-of-its-kind type events, The Cape Duo Challenge intends to raise the bar for 600 entrants.

The Cape Duo Challenge is introduced as dual discipline event – road and off-road cycling. In the midst of the winelands and mountains of Wellington and Paarl, in the Western Cape, this four-day challenge will take place. Organisers’ Pieter Joubert, Peter Diesel-Reynolds and Ernst Viljoen argue that cycling events require innovation. Joubert adds, “Everyone is waiting for a new, fresh challenge, and this is it.”

What the four days hold

The first day of the race kicks off in the picturesque Slanghoek Valley at Slanghoek Wine Cellar. It will take on the format of a tag-relay race, with one rider completing the road leg and then tagging his/her partner to send him/her off on the off-road leg.

On the second and third day of the race, riders move on to Schalk Burger & Sons’ famous wine estate, Welbedacht, situated under the picturesque Groenberg mountain range, Wellington.  Riders compete as a team, with day two dedicated to road cycling and day three to off-road. Two minute time gap penalties between riders will apply.

The fourth (and final) day of the race sees riders competing in the historic Paarl Winelands. Riders will have the pleasure of making their way through the mountainous back roads of the region and drink in the views of the lovely surrounding wine farms and orchards.
